It was NOT put in place to differentiate the two leagues. Originally both leagues were going to have it, but the NL backed out.
The DH was created after a great era of pitchers, to add some offense to the game, as offense had gone down. Plus, there is the benefit to protecting your pitchers from running injuries and the like.

cause some big wig who dosnt know anything about baseball wanted to;
1) sell more seats by not making the picture hit EVER
2) and 2 he is stupid and had no idea he was diluting the game.
theres nothing like a situation where one team will load the bases just to bring the picture up to the plate with 2 outs (american league sucks national league forever!)

The AL adopted the DH in order to increase offense, which in turn helped to increase ticket sales. This is a well-established historical trend.

The actualy main purpose was to provide more offense. But what it accomplished was that it helped destroy pitching in the American League.

To destroy the integrity of the game and to serve as the first signpost of the Apocalypse.
Worst rule ever.
