I was actually just researching this recently. I read that you have to give whole milk until 18 months because they need the fat for neural development, and skim milk has too much sodium for a baby that young. I also read that at 18 months you can switch to 2%, with the okay from your pediatrician, and to skim milk by age 2, when they can deal with the higher amount of salt. Some doctors do not agree with this, and I can't remember where I found this information, but that's what I remember reading. It's just not true that you have to give whole milk for their entire childhood.

The fat in whole milk helps contribute to important brain development between ages 1-2. After 2, toddlers can drink 2% or low-fat.

They need the fat for proper brain development. I think you need to give whole milk until about 2 yrs old. Ask your pediatrician.

Babies need the extra fat that whole milk provides. Their bodies are growing at such a tremendous rate that the fat will actually be used. Unlike us where it is just stored in places we don't want it.

Full fat milk. I don;t think you have to worry about fat content at that age.

considering that your brain is made of fat, they need it for development. There are certain vitamins that are fat soluble and you don't want to take that away.

whole milk has alot more vitamins in it, my child cannot drink that kind. it has to be lactofree but she is doing just fine on that. i think that it is more of a preference of the parent.
