There are different grades of Stainless Steel (304, 316 and other higher grades. 304 is the lowest and COULD rust. Stainless steels don't like chlorides, either so you could see some rusting but they should all be better than "mild" steel which will rust readily, especially with salt water. Stainless steel will not magnetize.

Does Stainless Steel Rust

Not if it is 200 or 400 grade stainless steel. Others have a small amount of carbon in them. What some people think is rust in a stainless sink is actually where a carbon steel piece has rubbed against it. Potato peels left in a stainless sink will darken it.

does stainless steel rust?

easy quick answer, in my 25 years of metal experience, no matter what they do or ever come up with steel always is currently and will eventually rust. There has never been nor will there ever be a steel that will not eventually rust. sorry folks it is just not possible. Some steel parts will remain visually rust free for several years, but underneath the surface and/or the protected coating rust is "havin some fun" I hope this helps.

no if it 100% stainless steel. If it is a combination of stainless steel and aluminum or other material all bets are off. You know if it's stainless steel with a magnet.

you will find rust on the surface of stainless steel if the passivation layer is broken, whatever it is passivation layer or austenitic stainless steel 304,316L. so I think every stainless steel can be rusted if you can not treat it well.

They can. There are many types of stainless steel, and some are more corrosion-resistant than others. The combination of nickel and chromium with the steel has this effect. One of the best stainless steels (in terms of corrosion resistance) is 316.

the higher the nickle content the less possibility to rust

nickel is expensive sinks now seem to be cheap and get rust stains easier than before.

non magnetic and magnetic stainless . if a magnet sticks its very cheap stainless and will get rust on it . non magnetic stainless will not get any rust.

It shouldn't. That's why the price is considerably higher. Check this:

Any of various steels alloyed with at least 10 percent chromium and sometimes containing other elements and that are resistant to corrosion or rusting associated with exposure to water and moist air.

I'd always heard the main alloy was nickel, which is pretty corrosion resistant. I guess it depends on the manufacturer.
