It can take anywhere from a few minutes to 4 hours depending on the operating system and how fragmented the drives are. Memory, CPU speed, drive size all affect the time it takes to defrag.

It is best to defrag on a regular basis (weekly is good) as it will speed up or at least help keep your computer up to speed.

It depends on how messed up your hard drive is. If you had it for a couple of months and years and never defragmented the hard drive before it might take 2 or 3 hours.

It's good practice to defrag your drive at least once or twice a month

Honestly, you should defragment a computer weekly. It optimizes your computer and actually speeds it up. If you have never run a defragment, I would do what the dude above mentioned, just run it while you sleep. You should set up a scheduled task to run (defrag.exe) every week. Depending on the size of your drive, it can take a few hours to just a few minutes.

Depends on how long ago you defragged...if it was recent, not long. If it's been a while or you've never defragmented your computer, give it at least 1/2 hour and probably more.

Defraging does take up some time, specially with the one in-built in windows.

Try this one, by aus logic

The speed of defragmentation of a computer is a combination of a few things. First your processor speed, next your memory size ( larger it is the faster larger files will be moved), how much fragmentation you have, and how big the hard drive is.

I have a 300Go HD and it takes more than 4 hours. I think it's useless because I notice no difference between before and after defragmentation.

depends on the size of the disk and level of fragmentation. Could be minutes, or many hours. Start it before you go to bed, maybe it will be done when you wake up.
