I currently play a Tenor Saxophone and I'm starting next year in my High School's 9th grade band. I want to try all saxophones from the small ones like Soprillo and Soprano to the big ones like the Baritone Sax. As of now, I want to switch to Alto Sax and stay with it throughout high school. My teachers tell me that I should work more on my Tenor Sax and they all say that I have a nice tone and that I'm skilled at it. Is it really a good idea to switch?

They might want you to stick with tenor because alto is more common than tenor. There are usually a shortage of tenor saxophone players in public school bands.

It would be a good idea on your part to switch because more college level auditioners expect you to play alto. In classical music, alto is more versatile than tenor.

You should keep playing tenor, though. There's nothing wrong with playing both.

Alto sax is in a different key than tenor. My daughter plays the tenor sax and she likes it. However, what she really wanted was a soprano sax, but we have not been able to find one for a good price. The tenor sax and the soprano sax are in the same key, B flat. The alto and the baritone sax are in the same key; I think it is E flat. Why don't you stay with tenor for at least another year?

Do what ever you want to do. I switched from Alto Sax to Tenor Sax, and personally I like the Tenor Sax's sound better. It depends on what you feel more comfortable on.

I don't think it matters at all. The fingering and style with which you play is the same. If your band is anything like mine though, you are probably lacking in tenor players. Alto tends to be the preferred sax choice for grade schools. I don't think you will have any difficulty bouncing back and forth between the two instruments.

There is no Soprillo sax. If you mean the Sapranino (or however you spell it), good luck finding one (plus they're REALLY expensive)! Alto sax is usually the starter.

Stay at tenor.
