I am curious how he could finance a car and not have the encumbrance recorded on the automobile title.
Automobiles are titled vehicles, and states have regulations on how they are used as collateral for loans. In most states I know of, the encumbrance is recorded on the title. In some states, the encumbrance may be of record with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
It might be worth an inquiry into whether or not the finance company has a valid lien. Look at your certificcate of title. Do you have a certificate of title? It might also be worthwhile calling DMV on their toll-free line.
There are too many unanswered questions here. I am not going to go so far as to say that the finance company is unsecured on this loan, but it remains a possibility.

Since the car is in your name, you are the legal owner. When the car is paid off make sure you get the title in your name ASAP. I would also contact the finance company and see about maybe getting the loan transfered to your name, but you might have to put more money down, which would also lower the payment amount.

The finance company is doing whatever they can to collect the debt. Let them come after you. They have no basis to collect the debt. Your main concern is to keep your credit report clear. Therefore get a copy of your credit report and write a protest letter to any agencies that are listing this as a bad debt. Supply a copy of your divorce decree. After it gets cleared be vigilant about monitoring your report thereafter...the finance company might submit it as a bad debt again and again. If this problem does not show up on your credit report, it is truly not your problem. Write a letter to the finance company explaining the circumstances and be done with it. If they don't cease and desist then hire a lawyer to make them go away.

If the registration or title is in your name and you can prove that you paid for the car in full (always pay your ex boyfriend in check or money order to have a paper record of payment), the car will belong to you.

Even if you dont get it into your name you need to contact the finance company.
You wont be privy to any info on the loan currently, you need to change that. Have your ex add you with full rights to it so that you can always call and get up to date info directly from them instead of relying on him. You can also make the payments directly to them instead of relying on him as a go between. You will also want to give them your contact info so they know to call you if a payment is missed.

the finance compay until you pay it off...but it is curious as to how you could put the registration in your name...usually state make the person financialy responsible on the car register it...but since the registration is in your name it will be yours...but he does have certain rights if you don't pay...if you don't make payments he has the right to get the car since he is responsible for it
