A lot of people allot the incorrect spelling and say 'alot'.

Alot is misguided; it extremely is meant to be "a lot" for the meaning "many". Allot means some thing diverse: Verb: provide or apportion (some thing) to somebody as a proportion or activity.

Technically, it depends on the meaning, which you did not specify.

If you are looking for the correct spelling of the phrase which means very many, or very much, then it is "a lot."

If you are looking for the correct spelling of the word which means to parcel out or assign, then it is "allot."

If you are looking for the correct spelling of a place name (I don't remember where it is located), then it is "Alot."

"Alot" is not a word. "Allot" is a word that means "to parcel out, distribute or apportion. "A lot" is a phrase meaning "quite a bit, a large number, many, considerable or considerably."

A LOT is correct.

However, because of constant use, ALOT is now sometimes accepted.
