I have an AC adapter that is not working for my laptop. One hair strain wire is exposed. I went to Circuit City and they told me it would cost $139 I found that to be ridiculously overpriced. The adapter has been working for months now, but today it just stopped working. Does anyone know if just the cord could be replaced instead of buying a new AC adapter.
Any advice or a cheaper method would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Ask your local computer geek or find a ham radio operator. Either of those types should be able to tell you if the power supply is actually bad or just needs to have the connector replaced.

Well.... everything works before it breaks, so that alone has no bearing.

Yes, the problem could just be the wire, but the problem is, the module (also called a brick) was not made to be opened or serviced. It is glued shut. Unless you know how to do it, you won't find anybody who will do it for you. And... even if you find such person, the labor alone will be more than what the new one will cost.

Your best bet is to look around and see if you can find used or surplus one on the internet. Since you didn't mention what the power supply is for, I can not offer you any more assistance.

It may not be the cord that is bad. I recommend you replace the AC adapter rather than trying to replace the bad sections of the cord.

Next time list the make and model and we will find you a new AC adapter for a much better price.

Google product search
part number stamped on the adapter.

The chord should be able to be replaced. Take your power supply to a local independant electronic technician and have him or her take a look at it. You can also try pricewatch.com or see about buying a new adapter directly from the manufacturer of your laptop.

This could easily be repaired if it just the wire and not the "brick". Call a small appliance repair shop and see if they will do it. Might not cost much, if not free.
