Recently in the news, many fraternities are having minority themed parties degrading minorities. What are your thoughts?

Minority themed? Well, depends what you mean by it. St.Patricks day is minority themed.. after all, Irish-americans are a minority! That isn't harmful. It depends on whether the party is celebrating a minority or degrading it. If they're degrading, like you said, then its wrong, no matter what group its aimed at.

Edit:
Hood parties, eh? Well, here are my thoughts. Not everyone in a hood is black, first and foremost. And personally, I think it would be pretty rediculous to put a bunch of amercrombie boys in baggy pants and backwards hats, but I also think it would be hilarious for them to show up in women's clothes, or to have an old english tea party, or dress up as goths. Its all a matter of how you look at it. If they were having a hood party on the premise "We're going to dress up like black people and go vandalize something!" or some stupidity like that, well, thats wrong. Just taking a group of people and dressing them up in outfits that they would never normally wear because it looks hilarious, well, I don't see that as racist. Just my thoughts.

Over ten years ago, in college I once had a party at my fraternity named "Tequila Sunrise" after the movie. A female student not affiliated with my fraternity asked her RA how do "dress like a Mexican?" and there was a demonstration outside my party before I knew what happened. Believe it or not, we didn't think that anyone would think this party had anything to do with dressing like a Mexican. We just thought it would be about getting drunk on Tequila all night long. No part of the name or actual point of the party had anything to do with any minorities. When we saw the demonstration we immediately invited a dean, presidents of Hispanic houses, and leaders of Hispanic groups (who were all outside) to come inside and see for themselves. They all agreed it was a misunderstanding and apologized to me for disrupting a regular, albeit an ill-named, party. I don't know about any other cases, I just know there was at least one where everyone focused on what was more entertaining/enraging to believe than what really was happening. I guess I'm saying don't be so quick to judge. Accusing someone of racism without any facts is tantamount to racism (or at least prejudice) itself.

Oh i heard about them. They're called "hood parties" and they dress up as stereotypes of each minority group then the idiots post the pics and video on the internet. I find in despicable and I'm glad many of the colleges have banned and reprimanded the students who participated in them.

Amber, thanks for the info. I did not know they were called "hood parties".

Of course they are offensive. I'm glad they have been outed. People need to know that racism is alive. You can't just be offended when it's your race. Racism is racism!
