While I am not absolutely certain, I don't believe the certification expires however, most places that you dive with will want to see a dive log or know when your last dive was so they know how up-to-date you skills are. If it's been a while, you can always take a referesher course. Better safe than sorry.

The certification is good forever; however, most training agencies also recommend tune-ups or refresher courses if you haven't been diving in a while.

With PADI, the tune-up and/or refresher is completed in one evening. The person will repeat all the skills that he/she learned in the open water class, plus go over some of the theory too.

I think most are forever. The only agency that I know of with an expiration is GUE and you just have to send them copies of some of your dives from a dive log to renew it.

Forever (at least as far as NAAUI is concerned). The previous guy is correct when he says they will want to see a dive log. However, I haven't kept a log in years and I always manage to talk the dive shop into letting me dive.
