the guy hasnt won anything all year yet. he seems to be in good form. i don't blame him for losing on clay cuz its his worst surface but now to a guy ranked 75 in the world? even on clay he should win to someone that much lower than him.

Remember, he didn't lose to just some nobody ranked #75. He lost to Gael Monfils, who is incredibly strong and incredibly fast which bode well for clay court play. This is the guy who took out James Blake at the French Open last year in 5 tough sets. Monfils' ranking is so low because of his recent injuries. Monfils was pushing toward the top ten, 15 months ago. Andy Roddick isn't going to be distraught about this match, but he definitely wanted a better performance going into his worst major.

Roddick got injured a few months ago. Before the injury, it seemed he was in great form. He is in good form right now making the quarterfinals of in singles and the semis of the tournament in Austria. Sure, Roddick did lose to Monfils. A player who only turned pro in 2004. You have to understand that clay is probably one surface he excels in. He beat Blake, Murray and Roddick in this surface. He was ranked #23 in the world in July 06 before he got injured. After the injury, he struggled at first. However, he seems to be back. Roddick didn't play bad against Monfils but Monfils played great. He will win a title soon. I predict he will win 3 tournaments this year. Roddick loves playing on grass and hard courts. I think he will win Wimbledon or the US Open this year. Federer hasn't played very well on hard courts lately and with the great serve Roddick has, he always a shot at winning Wimbledon.

Thanks for question!!

i know many will laugh when i say this, but tennis is the toughest sport of all.

think about it - there is no off-season. all other sports have some form of off-season. baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer - all have at least 2-3 months of complete down time when players can rest and get hungry all over again for the next season.

not tennis - it's a 12 month a year sport.

and if you decide to take a vacation of your own, you will lose your ranking. since it's a computer point based ranking system, the day you take your break and stop earning points, you get passed and move way down.

think about what a player goes through in the course of one tournament - he will play SEVEN matches over the course of a two week span. How many baseball games will a major league pitcher start in a two week span? two or three maybe, and if he has a bad outing, he is replaced in the 4th inning.

is it any wonder that players burn out in an average seven years - i think not.

once these guys have earned their first millions and then get some nice fat endorsement contracts, it's got to be hard to stay hungry and really desire to win.

roddick is tired and who can blame him - not me...

molfils is a great young player that has a great future ahead of him... not only is he a phenomenal clay court play but he also beat many other players in the top 25. i personally dont think anything is wrong with roddick...he has had a great year getting into many finals(big improvement from last year)...just give the guy a chance i mean he came back to being 3rd rank and moved to 4th bc of his injury

Gael Monfils isn't a tennis slouch, he won many junior grand slams before turning pro and now has just started coming into his own as a pro. Andy just has been getting outplayed and needs to step up his game.

He was just an above average player in the first place...whenever he won championships or went to finals, it was against very lousy opponents. The media created too much hype about this guy. He isn't the next big thing...he never was. Just an above average player BUT NOT AN ELITE PLAYER!

It's a result of the natural aging process.

He's still not comfortable with the new style he's trying to play and one has to wonder if he ever will be.
