I personally would rather my SS be great with the leather, rather than be a good hitter. Obviously a guy like Jeter does both, but really, offensively Jeter's talent boils down to hitting for average.
Reyes is very talented, and might be the all around best player in baseball right now, but he doesn't hit for good average, doesn't hit for power, and is an above average base stealer (not one of the greats of all time though).
Hanley Ramirez hits for better average and more power and is just as fast, but you won't here his name mentioned as much as the best SS.
Jack Wilson defensively is probably the best SS, but lacks a bat. Although he did win a Silver Slugger two years ago.
Jimmy Rollins is also pretty decent, as is Edgar Renteria.
Really, there are no 5 tool SS in MLB, so you have to figure out who has the most tools, and if any one tool is that much more dominant than everyone else.
Tejada doesn't steal much or hit for good average, but he does hit for good power and play good D. He also never misses a game.
Reyes - Runs fast and plays good D.
Jeter - Hits for average and plays good D.
Wilson - Plays good D.
Rollins - Hits for average and plays good D (his HR total this year is a fluke).
Hardy - Hits for power and average.
Renteria - Hits for average and plays good D.
Ramirez - Hits for average, runs fast, plays good D.
Tejada - Hits for power, plays good D.
I'd say Hanley is the best SS, and I'd give a tie to Jeter and Tejada for the second spot. Jeter because he is so much more experienced than most of them, and he's a leader. Tejada because he never misses a game.

Derek Jeter did not break a hitting record he just took over the 5th spot for most hits by a Yankee.
Now the best shortstops in the league would have to be Jose Reyes, and Edgar Renteria as of this year alone. Jeter is good but is not as hot as previous years

Jeter is #1. No need to put up any stats to back it up, he's that good. Reyes is second at the moment, but he is a hamstring pull away from being #5 or 6. JJ Hardy right now is having the best year, but has to play a few more years until he can be ranked up in the top 5.

Even though I hate the Yankees, Jeter is definitely top 2 along with Reyes. And Jeter didn't exactly break a record. He moved ahead of Dimaggio on the all-time Yankee hit list. Although if he stays healthy, I'm sure he will eventually break the record. Reyes is a freakin' beast, both defensively, offensively, and on the bases.

#1 - Jose Reyes. He's the most exciting player in the game and he's the best all around player in baseball. (I know people are gonna say Pujols is the best all around player in baseball. But now that Pujols is off the HGH, we all see what he's doing this year)
#2 - Hanley Ramirez. He's the same type of player as Jose Reyes, very exciting, very fast, good hitter. Him and Reyes are going to be the star class of the Shorstop position for years to come.

OK, i agree with you on jose reyes. but i despise derek jeter with a burning passion (yup, im a red sox fan as opposed to a yankee). so im gonna have to go with Michael Young, MVP of last years All Star game. He is a clutch hitter and makes terrific plays at short. Don't take offense at what i said about jeter; i can't help it.

Jimmy Rollins comes through when the Phillies needs him, (even though he is in a hitting slump right now)can steal a fair amount of bases and has a great attitude. and Derek Jeter excatly the reason u said. Jose Reyes is a good shorstop, but i HATE him, and the mets with a passion. he is a good athlete, but is a punk. and yea i am a Phillies fan

Who is the person who doesn't think Jose Reyes is a true 5 tool SS?
He hits roughly .300, with 20+ HR in 2006, makes few errors, 60+ SB, and can basically do anything on the field.
He is still young, but amazing.
I would have to say H. Ramirez as the #2 SS in the game right now.
