My old laptop is a piece of [junk] and I want to get a new one Is there any such thing as I can take the old HD out and hook it up to some type of USB periphial that I can just transfer files to the new HD? Thanks

There are external enclosures for this, make sure you get a laptop drive version.

Yes you can. You would have to buy the external casing or just buy a cheap USB hard drive the same size and just swap out that hd and transfer

Companies likeStartech (see startech.com) make smaller models for laptop hardrives that will do _exactly_ what you want and relatively inexpensively ($35)

you need one of this, you can always buy an enclosure if you plan to keep the drive as an usb drive, but if you just want to copy and dump the drive:
