It's possible that this is fungus, but it could also be the start of a Brooklynella infection. See this link for photos and more information on this - you can click the names of any of the conditions and bring up a link to more specific info on the biology and treatment. http://home2.pacific.net.ph/~sweetyummy42/disease.html

If this is Brooklynella, you need to treat quickly and aggressively.

As much as I like tangs, they seem susceptible to more diseases and parasites than other marine fish.

Neons are a awesome touchy species. The slightest water imbalance might kill all of them. The excellent approach to healing fungus is by way of giving them ideal water stipulations. This approach their immune approaches could have got more potent they usually might have fought off the fungus on their possess. It sounds like a body fungus as you suspect. I would put it in a quarintine tank and treat with Maracyn Saltwater treatment. This is a great product that will treat body fungus, secondary infections, and several other illnesses as well. Good Luck!

I had that in my tank, and it will spread pretty quickly if not cared for. Take a sample of your water to a store that specializes in fish tanks, fish and fish supplies (not petco or a regular pet store... one for fish only) and ask them to test your water. Along with this tell them the symptoms your fish has. The people in the store will help you with the meds. to put in there. The meds are not too expensive, and they will tell you how to add them to the tank in order to be most effective. You will need to know how many gallons of water your tank holds when you go so that they can give you the right dosage. Once you bought the meds. ask them if the they will stain any of the ornaments in your tank. I have a fresh water tank and had the same illness in there. The meds were blue and stained all of my ornaments (but they were grey so I did not mind) you may want to take them out and treat them seperatly to keep them from staining. Any live rock or coral in your tank will need to stay in to be treated as well as the fish. Good luck.
