It gives you an opportunity to calm your nerves by taking a break to smoke.
You could probably go outside and take a walk around the building and it would have the same calming affect as a cigarette would.
Just as long as you take a breather, your nerves will calm. How you choose to do this is all mental...

Back when I was young and thought I was all that, I used to fight - A LOT. If I got mad and was smoking I would sometimes flip the cigarette at the person who pizzed me off - just before I beat their azz, lol.

It does for me, see, when I'm at work, and I get frustrated I head downstairs to go outside for a smoke break. It gets me outside of the office, for at least ten minutes, and gives me a valid reason to leave the situation. It also makes me feel better.

From everything we learn it says that smoking tenses you up. So I don't know. I think it's an all in the head thing

I think it is the equivalent of counting to ten...but forget it if teh person has no ash, and about an inch of pure red fire on that butt, they are still majorly pissed.
