I have a degree in Psychology and have worked in many related fields. I feel the 3 most important qualities are:
1. Good listener (a given)
2. the ability to be completely unbiased (impossible in my opinion) Impossible to not take sides or form own opinions.
3. Strong stomach and nerves. Some of the stuff you deal with or hear will undoubtedly turn your stomach and rack your nerves. Be prepared.

objectivity, the resolve to push your clients even if it means they stop liking you for awhile, and empathy. good luck.
