Answer: No! On whole I believe your statement posed as a question is best answered ...America is neither hated, perhaps mistrusted, but infact the destination most in the world desire to be! Does most of the world want to move to Russia, China, or Iran? I think not! I'd wager those living there now would LOVE to be in America!
Details: You have never lived outside the U.S have you...
Such experience would modify your attitude I suspect.

It's very simple, the USA is the most powfull nation on earth and the people of many nations arround the world have a short memory . They are so jealous of the freedom , the freelifestyle . Just look at what American has contributed to the world in science, medicine.
It was the Americans and Russians who saved Europe in the last world war. Countries like France just callaped like a pack of cards so there is no doubt that history will repeat itself and all these nations who hate and mistrust the USA will beg the USA to help and save them .

It depens on the region of the world. A lot of it is xenophobia, though. You may or may not realize this, but for decades now, one of the more visible effects of globalization outside the US has been the export of "American Culture" throughout the globe. It's not really much of American Culture, but enough signs in english, and american corporate logos can get a xenophobe's hackles up. (You see the same thing, here, when people get uppity about billboards and TV broadcasts in spanish).
Another big reason is politics. Many countries in the world do not have so 'free' a media as the US, and thier governments are at odds with the US on a variety of issues - thus, they use thier state-controlled media to villify America and it's people. (Ironically, the US does not have state-controlled media, and a large chunk of the US media also villifies America to varying degrees).
Then there's a sort of reverse-underdog-effect. Everyone likes to root for the 'underdog,' right? Well, since it 'won' the Cold War, America is certainly /not/ the underdog in any conflict, is it? It's the Goliath to every foriegn idealist's David.

It wasn't always been this way! My grandparents came to this country in 1912! The way of Ellis Island! They became proud American citizens. They passed away in the 1973 at the ages of 83 & 86. To be an American really meant something at one time. I am still a proud American! I may not agree with the man in the White House at this time, and I am counting the days till his term is over with (606 days) I felt the same way about Johnson ( a democrat ) during the VietNam War so it isn't because of Polotical Party Lines OK? We stil have freedom of speech! Other countries don't like George Bush plain and simple! He did say "Either you are for us or you are against us." To some countries who do not have the freedoms we have that sounds like a dictatorship. Don't be hard on them they don't know any different.

The same reason you have nitwits around the country vilifying Walmart---because it is successful and prosperous. There will always be those who cannot stand success by anyone in any form-it diminishes them. I just had a similar talk last night with a group of friends of mixed heritage. Why do some African Americans trash and vilify those that are successful in their community by insinuating that they have gone over to the white mans side whatever that means. A very good friend said that success was intimidating to some within his community, especially the young, because they felt that success diminished them in the eyes of others. So its almost totally about jealousy as it is for those outside our country who find that life is a lot more difficult for them in their environment then it is for most of us. Power and might will always be challenged by those who desire both. Take it all with a grain of salt until there becomes a need for action or defense. The world will always turn to those who will protect them in their hour of need no matter what political circumstances preceded the threat. Those have always been our finest hours.

On what grounds do you base your assertion that Americans are "so hate and mistrusted" throughout the world? Have you polled the world? And if you have, how have you measured hate and mistrust? And if by those standards you've found that we are indeed hated and mistrusted, can you deem these results legitimate, given the fact that most of your respondents couldn't have interacted with a true cross-section of the American populace?

Because we are CONSTANTLY messing around in other countries and trying to force our agenda on them.
Remember the Bay of Pigs?
Remember Operation Northwoods?
Remember when we invaded Iran, removed their government and installed the dictatatorial government of the Shah?
Remember when we sent Marines to Russia in 1918 to fight against the Communists and basically started the Cold War by showing the Red Russians that we were their enemies from the very begininng?
Remember the assasination of Allende?
Remember Vietnam?
Remember the invasion of Panama after Noriega disobeyed orders from the C.I.A.?
Remember when Bush called Iran evil? That scared the living hell out of them. How would we feel if the President of a superpower called us evil and threatened to take us out?
In the words of my candidate for President, former Sen. Mike Gravel; "We make our enemies thats the unfortunate part of it. If you as a person, you dont have enemies, you may have people dislike you, but if you go hate them and if you do things to them, theyre going to be your enemies. And so we have to approach world affairs as Americans, equal to everybody else and treat them equally and youll find we wont have as many enemies that we think we have"
