At actorsaccess.com you can see the listings for free, but to submit yourself online you have to pay. This is the best site because it's linked with Breakdown Services which is where casting directors put out their needs and talent agents get all their leads for their clients. Its the industry standard.

At backstage.com you can do a free search, but you can only see the first part of the information. In order to see the whole ad, you have to subscribe or buy the paper in print.

Are you looking for film or theatre? Where are you located? If you're in New York or LA, check out Backstage (a newspaper) and actorsaccess.com (they also do Chicago, Miami, Toronto and a few others. You can also check Craigslist. Sometimes there are some legit projects for student films or indie films, but you usually have to wade through a lot of garbage.
For theatre, check out your local universities theatre department. They will usually post notices on a board from local theatres or may have some information to direct you. You local paper's entertainment section may also post auditions (for example, the Washington Post does this every Friday ). Depending on how big your city is will determine how many resources you have available. The bigger your city, the more websites/listservs/organizations there will be which help actors find work. If nothing else, at least get together a list of theatres taken from postings in your paper and call them or visit their websites to see when they’re holding auditions. Professional theatres will have “invite only” auditions, but community theatre’s will have open calls.
For film, it’s difficult to give specific suggestions outside of the DC Market since that's what I'm familiar with, but generically I would again suggest Craiglist or sagindie.com and also seeing if any of your local universities or community colleges has a film department. If they do, then guaranteed their students will be doing short films for assignments and will need actors. Student films are a great way to get experience and build your resume when just starting out. Even better if they’re grad students and are doing their thesis film since these tend be better quality. My very first film was a thesis film for an MFA student and it was a great experience.
Best of luck!!

I am going to hazard a guess and say, not good ones. Though it is possible, you are probably going to need an agent.

A legitimate agent. Remember, this is business. If an agent asks for money at any time then you can pretty much write them off.

A good agent will work on a percentage basis. You pay them a percentage of your wage. That way, they will bargain for you and try to get the most because they benefit from that.

As far as percentage goes, I would say that it shouldn't be much. Any double digits (ie above 10%) could be a warning. That is how it works in publishing. I don't see how it could be different in acting.

Yes, but it is really dicey. Craigslist has lots of auditions. Your local paper should have theatre auditions. University bulletin boards in the film and drama departments. Of course, Backstage as someone mentioned. I would be wary of some of these internet sites but pick and choose at your own risk. Take someone along on these auditions, don't go to anyone's home (only to an office, theatre or public place).Eventually, you'll want to seek an agent for the better roles and to protect your interests.
