Is there any steps I need to take before this will work or will it work upon connection?

Actually, dewcoons, they do make SATA DVD/CD drives, which was an option I was considering. However, compatibility issues are huge with SATA disc drives so I opted out.

If you mean can you run a SATA drive and an IDE drive in the same computer, yes. They do not make SATA CD or DVD drives, so every computer in the world with a SATA hard drive is running an IDE CD or DVD drive.

yes, it should absolutely work upon connection. I have a DVD R/W IDE drive, and two SATA hard drives. It's actually a typical setup for desktops these days.

DVD drives are inherently IDE connections, you'll be connecting them to different places, so, as long as you make sure the connections are fine there shouldn't be any issues. Assuming you're building a desktop.

No steps required just plug and play nothing to take in consideration.
