Actually,it just depends on how long you sleep you sleep the best after about 45 minutes to an hour because your body goes into REM (rapid eye movement) which means your body and mind are completely relax and your subconscious is extremely active and causing "dreams". During this time you get the most "fitful" sleep. Sadly most adults only get about 2 to 3 hours of this type of sleep at night. As where infants and toddlers can get 7 to 8. Hope this helped answer your question even though it may have been a lil' more info than what u were looking for.:)

Not really. It's an old wives tale and was used to encourage children to go to bed early. It was said "An hour before twelve is worth two after." In reality as long as you get sufficient sleep the time doesn't matter. Remember that time is a concept invented by man as a way of measuring the passing of events. Personally I need little sleep, rarely going to bed before 1.00 am and rising around 7.00 am, but then I am 60. As you get older you seem to need less sleep. I am always alert and sometimes sleep for less than 5 hours a night although I do believe that five is the minimum.

It depends on the person.

If the person isn't authentically tired, the initial sleep will be "fitful". If the person is tired, it will be easy to go into deep sleep and the "fitful" periods will be later.

In terms of averages, once a person is in deep sleep the mind usually goes into REM sleep for a while about every 45 minutes returning to deep sleep again, until either forcefully awakened or fully-rested.

It's much easier to awaken at or near the REM phase.

General up-on-the-soapbox-rant: REM sleep is vital. If you don't dream while you're asleep, you may hallucinate while you're away. Such is a danger to yourself and others Catnaps less than 45-minutes may rest the body, but they don't usually provide REM time. Alcohol also depresses REM sleep.
