This is my first pregnancy and at 15 weeks I went to see my doctor because I was experiencing vaginal bleeding. My doctor was not there, but another doctor checked me and my baby out and said everything was fine (THANK GOD!). He then asked if I wanted to know the sex of the baby and I was shocked because I thought I had to wait a little longer to find out the sex. However, I decided to hear what he had to say and he told me I was having a boy! I was excited but a little disappointed that it wasn't a girl. So anyways we started buying boy things, telling friends and family, and even picking out names. The following week I went in for my regular appointment at 16 weeks and my doctor said he thinks it's a boy, but he couldn't find the penis!! I have been reading a lot about doctors mistakening an umbilical cord for a penis and now I am getting worried. Could I be having a girl?

yes. an u/s is NEVER 100% anyway, so there is always a chance of it being wrong. there have been many times an umbilical cord is a mistaken penis, and also a baby girls genitals could be swollen due to hormones and can be mistaken for a penis as well. a little boy could also be hiding his "stuff" and a boy can be mistaken as a girl often too!! you may get another u/s later, and they can look again, b/c typically at 15 weeks its not as clear as it would be at 20+ weeks. i would hold off a bit no buying blue or pink. congrats though!!

You never know, but you can't always see the penis. The other landmark to look for is the scrotum. It really depends on the baby's position.
These are the stats I know: if they don't see a penis OR s scrotum, 80% of the time it's a girl.
Just save the receipts...you'll probably have another ultrasound later anyway. Buy gender neutral stuff until then!

When I was in the hospital after delivering my 1st child I met a woman in the hallway. She was pushing a bassinet with a baby all dressed in pink. I said "Oh, a little girl, huh?" and she said "NOPE! This is a little boy... our ultrasound said 'girl' so that's all we bought for clothes!"
Moral to the story? Errors are made when determining by ultrasound if a baby is a boy or a girl. You could well be having a girl... don't start buying all blue yet!

They will never tell you 100% sure. Most likely if the first dr. saw a penis then it's a boy. However, they are usually only 80% accurate. Hoping that it is a girl won't make it a girl.

Ultrasounds have been known to be wrong. My friend was told she was having a boy, got all kinds of blue stuff and ended up having a little girl.

Ultrasounds have been around for about thirty years. Prior to that, prenatal sex diagnosis was just a guess. Try to be patient, pick out a few names appropriate for boys or girls.
