no, you have to search first for wireless connections, then select the one you want. Windows may advise you that it found a wireless network, but you still have to manually configure the connection.
if it's a secure connection, you then have to authenticate with it (a supplied password, or network key)

Yes, no and maybe.
If the wireless router is set up to broadcast its presence (most are) then your card should be able to it. But you usually have to click on the wireless icon and check the list of available networks. Then select it from the network and card will attempt to connect. You may need to know the password to use a network if it is secured.
Once you have hooked to a network for the first time, it will automatically recognize and hook to the network in the future.
But you do have to configure each network the first time.

That depends on how you have it set up. If you are using a management software such as linksys, you would open the software up by clicking the little green icon in the system tray. If you're not using the management software, you can double click the computer icon in the tray.
Either way, after you open it, you should see a list of available networks. The one's with a lock next to it are protected. The one's with out a lock are open. You should be able to click on it and connect.

You have to connect to a new network by clicking on the icon on your taskbar next to the clock (picture of two computers). It will bring up a list of networks you can connect to. You can then choose which network you would like to connect to. You can only connect to public networks that are not secured with a key. To connect to a network that is secured, you will need to have the key (password) in order to connect)

It would depend on if the router you attempting to connect to is secured or OPEN open yes secured you would need a passphrase or code
Your laptop will tell you what networks are available, and you can try to connect to all of them one at a time until one lets you in (Unsecured)

Ditto all the above, and I might add, don't make my mistake: I was an ex-dialup user. I forgot to set up my internet options to allow the computer to connect to the internet via dialup *only* if something faster is not available! Stoopid me!
