I fear your question is far too limiting. How do you define poor? Is poor a economic factor and if so do you measure that factor through dollars or through what they have? The Amish are industrious. They build their houses with wood from their land, they buy food with goods they raise or grow on their farms.
Are the Amish poor in spirit? Certainly not in terms of how they reacted when the unspeakable tragedy at the school house last year.
Also your term "as a people" is interesting. The Amish are a socialistic society which means that everyone is basically provided for. In doing this, no one is left behind and could never be poor no matter how you define it.

No, most certainly not Jedidiah! LOL!
J/K, really, I love the Amish folk!
The lifestyle that they CHOSE to live is RICH in culture, MORALITY and VIRTUE. Men actually are raised up to BE MEN, out doing their thing for the HOME (not sitting on their bums 14+ hours a day playing on-line vid games or game systems. The women likewise are raised up to be WOMEN; as in feminine, good homemakers, and FOCUSED uncompromisingly on the rearing and schooling of the children.
I have always wanted to join some Amish country lifestyle, but am unsure Ive been "in the world" too long to not obsess about missing the creature comforts; namely microwaves, cell phone and "automobiles"- teeheeeheee!
If there is nothing else that one can find appealing as it refers to Amish prosperity......it lies ALONE in the moral character that they do their best to uphold. THAT, in my opinion, is RICH LIVING!
God Bless you, and I hope you will be blessed BY the study of this final University project! amen! <><

I don't consider Amish as poor people. Just because they don't spend a lot of money doesn't make them poor. Besides, there are other ways in which a person can be rich without looking at the dollar sign. The Amish are probably much smarter than the general population thinks they are.

No - most Amish are very good business people, and have accumulated more than enough wealth (either through money or land holdings) to take care of themselves and their families quite well.

No, just because the chose to live their lives simply and not have all these worldly things that most think they can't live without does not make one poor. They probably don't consider themselves as poor, because they are rich in other ways, that people don't understand or have failed to remember what makes a soul rich. I admire them for holding on to their values, it is something we are missing alot of in today's society.

Yes, most definitely. They are religious. What religion tells a human to go out, get rich and enjoy life? None. All religions tell a person to suffer through this life so they can have eternal paradise in the afterlife. They reject material wealth but this is one of the consequences of rejecting reason. I consider them to be philosophically and materially impoverished.

They own a lot of land and pay cash for eveything. There will be people to care for them until they die, it's worked into the social structure within the community. They may not do the bling-bling, but sugar, they AIN'T poor!
