depends on what kind of server you are talking about... if you talking about a gaming i would say that you are better off renting from someone unless you have a computer just lying around...

That is a little vague, could you be more specific? Are you looking to setup a domain controller for managing users and computers, a print server, a file server, a web server, an app server or any other number of types of servers?? Would it be windows based, unix based or linux based?
