Formed in the late sixties, led by the two sisters, June and Jean *i*l*n*t*n, they sounded like a real rock band. From that moment on, it was cool and accepted for women to play rock music.

The first all- female rock bands to have any degree of commercial success were Fanny and Heart in the early Seventies. Later on (around '77) The Slits had a couple of modest hits in the UK.
For any kind of sustained commercial success I guess you'd be looking at The Bangles in the '80s ,though.
All that said- Rock has been such a male- dominated and basically sexist genre, that there were probably lots of really great all girl bands that just never got given the opportunity to make their mark.

There was an all girl rock band called "B-i-t-c-h" (no hyphens, had to use them to fool the violation robot) back in 1972/3 with a very attractive bass guitarist called Christine Butler. Saw them at the (then) Manchester Hard Rock.
