I didn't have a bassinet for my first and he did just fine in the crib. I wouldn't have had a bassinet for my 2nd but my MIL thought I should have on so she bought it for me. I used it for about 4 weeks. Then she was in the crib!! I personally think that it is a waste of money.

I never used a bassinet, as I have a dog it would not be advisable unless it was in some sort of frame. Generally bassinets are used to keep baby close to mom during the day and night. The main benefit is that they are portable and small.

However you can easily put the crib right up against the bed. I have two cribs one set up as a co-sleeper beside the bed. It has one of the sides removed and the mattress is level with the main mattress. Most nights now I sleep in the crib *lol*. The other crib is for napping and whatnot so he can be safe, and because sometimes he wants to sleep alone.

You can generally get cribs for free or very cheap on freecycle or at garage sales.

A bassinet is not needed the baby can go straight into a crib. I bought a bassinet for my daughter only because we were short on space and cash and I needed more time to save up for a crib.

No, you do not have to have a bassinet for your baby. If you have the room, just keep the crib in your bedroom for a few weeks. Some pediatricians advise parents to allow the baby to sleep in the same room for a while. We had our baby in a cradle next to the bed for 7 weeks, then I moved her to her own room. She was right across the hall, and I didn't even have to have a monitor on to hear her. I'd just put the crib in your bedroom and not worry about a bassinet. The baby will grow out of the bassinet quickly anyway.

I have a now 3 month old son and I do have a bassinet for him, but it was giving to me and its great, but if you don't have one thats fine, putting the baby in the crib is fine. My son also had a crib an he loves it more than the bassinet...so save your money ..ok...but have the baby in the same room as u for night feed...good luck

no you do not have to have a bassinet. most moms get bassinets for security reasons or atleast i did! and it is much easier to move out of the room once the baby goes into the crib. you can set the crib up in your bedroom but once you are ready for the baby to have his own room you will have to take it down and put it back up again. so a bassinet saves alot of hassle.

bassinet is not necessary, you can go straight to a crib. No problem with it. If you can find a cheap, portable bassinet though, its nice because you can take it places so the baby can sleep in it. But other than that, stick with the crib. Good luck!!

I would think it would be ok to start with a crib. I used a bassinet only cuz I was given one and cuz that's what I was used to with my younger siblings. I don't think it's necessary, especially if you are trying to save money. Some people like them cuz they put them in the parent's room first, until the baby gets bigger and they move into their own room in the crib.

Are you putting the crib next to your bed for all those night-time feedings? Or are you gonna get up and go all the way into your nursery?
What if you just can't bear to be away from your baby for a whole night and you want to check on them over and over??
I think bassinet good...
Check a second hand shop. They aren't that expensive new, either.

So many people end up with baby in the bed. I wouldn't bother with a bassinet. I was really gung-ho about putting my first baby in the crib, but she wasn't interested, and I needed some sleep!
