Hi Everyone, I recently purchased a '03 Accord and noticed that there are black residues in my tailpipe - maybe oil?? Yesterday, my car ran out completely of oil - the oil indicater was blinking. There isn't any noticeable leak - I brought it into a service center today and they said that nothing is wrong with the car and that I only needed my oil change. Is this correct? How can my car go completely out of oil? The last oil change was 2 months ago...and what is the black residue in the tailpipe?

Thanks for the inputs...so my next question is, how can I explain my concerns to the people at the service center?? I took my car in two weeks ago because I noticed the black oily residues - again they stated that nothing is wrong with the car. I don't want to argue with them if truly nothing is wrong my car - but again, I just bought this car - I don't want it to break down - I think the service center is getting annoyed. Please help!

I've got a 2003 Accord Coupe V-6 dual exhaut and I can tell you from experience that the chrome tailpipe extensions that came on the car from the factory had the black carbon visible on the outlets from about the first month on. You are not seeing 'oil' at the tailpipe; what you are seeing is carbon disolved by the condensation that occurs when the humidity in the air condenses in the hot exaust pipe after you shut the car off. On many of the domestic trucks like the Ford F150s you'll actually see water running out of the tail pipe after they have just been started up. Anyway, on the Accord, that water brings with it the carbon deposits and it feels 'oily' but it is not oil and it is nothing to worry about--its perfectly normal.

as for the oil consumption, you didn't mention how many miles you drove in the last 2 months. Its not unusual for cars to use a quart of oil every 3000 miles or so; they will use more when the weather is cold so in the winter 2500 miles per quart is not abnormal. The oil warning light on the Accord comes on when you are 2 quarts low, so I doubt it was 'completely' out of oil, particularly if the service center said it 'just needed an oil change'.

sounds like your service center is right on the mark with what they are telling you.

If you bought it from that service center, then you may want to get a second opinion. Either way, there are very few states that have lemon laws for used cars. Unfortunately, you may be stuck with the problem. You should really only go through that much oil. The minimum required oil change interval is 10000 miles. We recommend 5000 at our dealership. there is no way you should have lost that much oil unless you are driving 30K per year or something.

Finding oil in the tail pipe is a not good
It sounds like your car is burning the oil and over time it buns up what you have.
Do thi, rev the car in park and look for black oily smoke. If there is a lot of blue smoke then the car is burning the oil.

very possible-----you will always have some residue in your tailpipe----most of the time it is carbon being blown out of the engine----sometimes if a car goes way over the 3000 miles mark on an oil change it will literally run itself out of oil----you were lucky you did not lock the motor up

The 2003-04 with V6 has transmission issues. Avoid those 2 years.
