That is the best square root symbol available for Yahoo! Answers.

As for the Question,

√3(√12-√3)
= √3(√(4*3)-√3)
= √3(2√3-√3)
= √3(√3)
= 3

√3(√12-√3)
= (√3 * √12) - (√3 * √3)
= √36 - √9
= 6 - 9
= 3 (assuming only positive answers)

That is the square root symbol. Just use some parenthesis to show what's under the radical

√12 = 2√3
√3 (2√3) = 6 and √3 (√3) = 3
So

In Yahoo! Answers, hold down the alt key, type 251 on numeric keypad, and release alt. √. π is alt-227, and so on. Lots of useful symbols between alt-220 or so and alt-255.

I've put a link below that has a lot of ascii codes at the bottom of the web page. Just remember to type the numbers using the **numeric** keypad; the row of numbers at the top of your keyboard won't work for this purpose.
