As Jaz has said "freewebs" are completely free but the website address will be "www.freewebs.com/mywebsite*", but you can pay for the address to be "www.mywebsite*.com. Or if you want something LIKE myspace, you could join www.bebo.com.
*this is obiously just an example.

I know lots about things like this. I depends what you want. you could go to www.freewebs.com or www.piczo.com but they have ads and arent usually the greatest websites. If you are talking like a domain name which is for example www.blabla.com instead of www.freewebs.com/blabla or www.blabla.piczo.com......the www.blabla.com costs money. You usually pay by year and the price all depends on the package you get. I hope you understand.

This question is asked often, on Yahoo! Answers. And, yes, all of the above are correct, and useful, and there's lots of others, some that will even give your own .com name, and some that will give you a website with a name of "their" own...
That's fine, if it's what you want, then skip the rest of my answer, and quit reading it RIGHT NOW!!!
The only thing is, with a free website is, I have not seen one in which you can totally freely get a .com name all your own AND totally freely write a set of web pages totally freely customized exactly and precisely the way you want them to look. If you're willing to put up with the way somebody else decided your web page should look, then a freebie, will work fine for you...

What type of free website? Something with ads (such as yahoo, or angelfire) or something without them? In other words, hosting?
If you want hosting, there are a lot of hosting communities that you can go to. Such as hostmatrix.org.
