They will do a pap smear again when the original pap is not conclusive for any change. If you get two in a row like that or the next pap is conclusive for a change it is time to have a look at the cervix through a colposcope.
They will insert a speculum like always (make sure to empty your bladder) and then paint the cervix with vinegar and a bluish solution- this makes areas that are abnormal stand out. Then they will take a little pinch biopsy and yes it may hurt for just a second and leave you with some cramps. I would suggest taking 3 Advils (200mg each) before you leave for your appointment with a little snack as long as you are not allergic to them. Please do not skip this appointment- it is very important to follow up an abnormal pap. As for needing a ride probably not but if you are nervous it is always nice to have a friend for emotional support. They will give you follow up instructions about nothing in the vagina for a specified period of time- follow them so you do not have any weird bleeding. Sometimes when they do the biopsy they use a solution called Monsel's to stop the bleeding- if they do several days later you may have what looks like coffee grounds coming from your vagina- not to worry it is normal.
Good luck and you are taking good care of yourself

The first time I had one I was so nervous I had my mom take me, and I'm really glad that I did.
It doesn't hurt, but it is uncomfortable, and a necessary evil. They sometimes just take another papsmear because they want to doublecheck for dysplasia signs before making you go through a coloscopy or a LEEP procedure.
Just relax, maybe ask your doctor if they could prescribe something for you to take the morning of, to help you calm down. Also, this might sound really gross, but you're going to have a coffee like discharge for a few weeks. Also, you may have big globs of stuff come out. Totally normal. No sex for 4 weeks, and if you feel that something isn't right, DO NOT hesitate to call your doctor and tell them. You know your body better than anyone else, including your doctors.

A coloscopy is a closer exam of your cervical tissue. They will actually take more cells than in a pap smear. It's similiar to a pap, but they will put vinegar on your cervix while looking thru a microscope to see which cells turn a white color and biopsy them. You've probably had 2 or more abnormal paps and they need a closer examination. It's uncomfortable and you may bleed slightly afterwards. Tylenol after may help. You don't need anyone to drive you unless you need the moral support. Good luck

Yes. It's worth it, but you can even feel sick afterwards. I wouldn't mention anything to your family, as most colposcopies are done and then if there is dysplasia present, they set up another appointment to burn (laser) of the cells. If they aren't able to do the laser procedure, then I would mention it to your family. It's worrying about your personal area that until you really know it's something worse is going on isn't worth their concern or they'll just keep bugging you about information and then you'll listen to their opinions, or stories about other friends daughters, girl friends, etc. or you'll hear horror stories about it. It's best to ask your best girlfriend to accompany you or your mother. It's really not a good thing to bring your boyfriend, fiance or husband. It's an area that men can't get out of their minds once they see things they shouldn't on the computer screen or visual monitor. It sets yourself up for some belittling behaviour if they don't give the amount of concern you're expecting. I didn't mind the coloposcopy, because it's a quick snip. It's the laser part that wasn't pleasant and they did not offer knocking you out for it. I would recommend not being alert during the procedure.

Ask your doctor "why"? You have to go between a coloscopy and a pap...I don't understand the connection.
You should be able to get all the instructions for the procedure from your doctor's office. Just ask.
When I had a coloscopy it didn't hurt. Take care.

They are going to be doing a biopsy of your cervix. It will make you a little crampy, but it's not horrible. You don't need to have someone drive you. Just make sure you have some tylenol or something with you that you can take after your done. The biopsy is to determine if you have cancerous or precancerous cells in your cervix. If you do, they will have to be removed. You should have the results in about 2 weeks.

It gives you cramps when they take a tissue sample. Just for moral support I would have someone take you and go in with you. They will clip 4 pieces (small) like a clock..a sample at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 and send it out to look at the cells for abnormalities. Its a very good evaluation.

Hello, colonoscopy doesn't hurt. They will put you to sleep and perform the procedure you won't even know it. But you should really have someone to drive you back home. Also there is another form of having this procedure done which is called a virtual colonoscopy. Where this is like a cat scan and takes about 5 minutes to do. The other is where they insert a tube with a little camera on the end through your nose into your colon. But once they put you out you won't feel a thing. Sounds spooky I know but if your uncomfortable talk to your doctor about the virtual colonoscopy. Good Luck.
