Hi, does anyone know details of how a divorce works in the State of Ohio, in Butler County? I'm not necessarily getting one, but I wanted to obtain all the info. I could "just in case." Basic overview, married 6 years, second for both, no children and he makes over 3 times what I do. Thanks much!

What specifically do you want to know about?

As far as property distribution, generally speaking, regardless of the fact that he made more money, you’re entitled to half of anything acquired *during* the marriage (with the exception of a few items, such inheritance) .

As far as spousal support, a couple of things to consider: (1) 6 years in not considered a long-term marriage. (2) if you don’t have any kids, there was no reason you couldn’t have gone to school, obtained some additional job skills (both of which would have increased your earning ability), etc. So, unless you in some way contributed to his current income ability (ie supporting him financially while he was in school), then don’t count on spousal support (if you do receive it, it will only be for a short time).

Discuss ALL the details of your situation with a local attorney for advice.

Call the clerk of the Butler County Superior Court and ask for a free, no-children, dissolution of marriage packet. The clerk will send you one, with full instructions, and you will be properly informed about the details of how a divorce works in Ohio.

If you want to do it the cheap way....... Call your local courthouse and find out when there will be a class on dissolution doing it yourself to go over the paperwork normally an attorney does this it's about a 2 hour class and cost's 10.00. They will give you all the forms and get them filled out and take them to the courthouse and file them 200.00 court cost are 50.00 or less. they will set date and then you both appear and it will be over that is only if you both can agree on everything.
If you both cant agree then you need to get an attorney it could cost you anywhere from 1,000.00 or more but you could ask for legal fees and court costs to be paid for by the other party.
Good luck!
