Jack was bringing his father's body back when the plane crashed. If the scenes on the finale of Jack with the beard is the future then why did he tell the new chief of surgery to go ask his father how many drinks he had that day. He is talking like he is alive.

They never confirmed that he was alive....Jack was just talking like he was - but Jack appeared to be a little bit high and/or drunk!

Good question, with no clear answer. However, there are a couple of theories.

If you remember from early Season 1, Jack couldn't find his father's body when he discovered the coffin among the wreckage. Some people think this means Jack's father is still alive, or re-animated, or it could be the producers messing with us.

Future Jack could also be delusional, and pretending that he is living as he did before events on the island and before his father died.

I think the most reasonable explanation is the one presented in the episode itself. Jack snapped after the events on the island. The traumatic experience left him shattered and out of touch with reality.

Hopefully, this particular question will be cleared up in future episodes, and won't take three seasons to explain.

At the beginning I thought that they were all dead. That they all died in the plane crash. If you look at the flashbacks of their lives, they were all "bad", that's why they all ended in this island. Is the island considered hell? or somewhere in between? Think about it. the one that drowned, Charlie, was rescued? what does that mean? Dying in the island means escaping the island for a better place? Or maybe their future lives will cause them terrible pain and dying is in their best interest. The bad guys said " you are not supposed to do that!" You are not supposed to go back. Why didn't the bad guy kill Jack? Then, the bad guys finally let him go.If Naomi was BAD, they were not supposed to go with her, and they were not to leave the island.
And then they jump to the scene in the future. Jack is an alcoholic and a drug addict. His life is obviously ruined. Jack wants to go back to the island and urges kate to go back. That is why I assume "the island" is what happens right before you die.. Or maybe I am completely wrong, we'll find out in 2008. (I have a feeling they will be going back)

Good question and I'd like to take a quick moment to comment on how fake that beard looked lol. Knowing lost Jack's dad's body wasn't the right one being transported or something. That was one of the wildest endings I've ever seen to a finale, ever! I cannot wait for next season. Very good point you have.

I think it's because what we saw was Jack in an alternate dimension. when the sky turned purple because the numbers weren't entered it threw everyone on the island into an alternate dimension. So now instead of everyone on the plane dying in the crash they lived and now Jack's dad is alive and not dead. And also Kate wasn't in jail. She was being transferred back to the states on the plane for murder. If they were rescued in their actual dimension she'd be in Prison for murder.

There are several theories. The first is that Jack is just crazy. Another is that his father never died. The body was missing from the coffen in season one. Another is that what we saw isn't the furture, but a 'sideways flash' which shows a parallel university in which the events around the crash happened differently. www.lostpedia.com has a huge discussion on the theories.

My sister and I were talking about the same thing. I don't know if Jack was being sarcastic, or was this an 'alternate' future. Got a little lost on that one. (Ha, ha...get it...I got lost.)

I know! That is the ONLY thing fishy about the flashfoward. I loved the finale up until the very last scene.

Jacks dad is DEAD

Notice the wtf look on the doctors face when Jack mentioned his dads name.

Notice his reaction to the pharmacist when she wanted to verify the prescription that "his dad" signed.

He was high/drunk.
