I have a wired ADSL modem from the ISP. I want to have Wifi at home but I don't want 2 devices. I want one device to be the Modem and the Wifi device. What are my options?

They do sell ADSL modem which include a wireless router. But it involves getting your ADSL provider to allow you to switch to that modem. They would have to reconfigure your account for the new MAC and other information.

That is assuming that they will allow it. Most providers do not because since every modem configures differently, they can not possibly keep their people trained on 200 different devices. Most companies will insist that you use their selected brand and model.

Plus if (when) the modem dies, you will have to figure out how to fix it. They will not repair, replace or troubleshoot it for you. Unless you are a network guru, you probably don't want to have to do that.

And as wireless improves in speed and distance, it is cheaper to replace just a router (about once a year is normal) then an ADSL modem with wireless router.

So the practical answer is: two devices. Attach the ADSL to a wireless router. Use the wireless router to set up your network. (Like the 99% of the rest of us do.)

Actiontec makes a gateway that has both the modem and the wireless in one device. Do a google search for actiontec gateway.

Other companies make them also. Check around a little bit. Im almost certain best buy carries the actiontec.

You'd probably have to contact your ISP to see if they offer a modem like that, but I've never seen one. You'll probably end up having to get a wireless router in addition to your modem.

Any downloads using the cellular network will come off of your allowance. However to adress your point, it's very rare that I download apps, music or videos when i haven't got acess to wifi. Wifi is free on all data plans, so is best to use that as much as possible.

Buy a wifi enabled router. Linksys make them so do Thomson, D-link and lots of other companies. Linksys seem to be well regarded. I like my Thomson... got it included in the ADSL bundle.

It replaces your router and gives you wifi as well.

You need a wireless router to have "wi-fi". If you are not using a wireless router you will not be able to connect wirelessly. The wireless routers send out frequencies in a specific range depending on the wireless router you by and is picked up by the NIC card on your wireless device (i.e. laptop, PDA, etc.)

Hope this helps,

My advice to you is to check www.linksys.com it is a division of cisco systems that specialises on these kinds of gadgets. I own several products made by them and from my experience they are very reliable and easy to install. I hope this helps.
