Please see http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/astronauts/default.htm but it doesn't give any detailed information since they're not hiring astronauts right now. When I applied (unsuccessfully), in order to be a Pilot astronaut, you needed military test pilot experience with at least 1500 hours of experience in jets. To be a Mission Specialist astronaut, you needed an M.D. degree or a Ph.D. in *any* subject (one shuttle astronaut was a Ph.D. Sanitary Engineer who knew how to build waste treatment plants). It was not necessary to be associated with a particular satellite or space research project.

To be an astronaut, you can be either a pilot or mission specialist. If you want to be a pilot, go to the Air Force Academy. But only the very best make it. If you want to be a mission specialist, it's even harder - you need a PhD in physics or astrophysics (about 10 years of college), then you need to come up with an idea for a satellite and propse it and get money for it and build it and even then there's a good chance you can't go up to launch it.

None. You just need to be George W. Bush's friend. Be quick about it. His term ends soon.
