It just seems to me that a steryotype can only be put into place if it was, at some point, true. Why are they considered so negitive, then? Obviously they don't hold true in every instance, but it seems like they do a vast majority of the time.

For example- It really seems like most irish people drink alot, and really like beer (not everyone, obviously.)

I'm a girl, and I'll say this- It really seems like most women are horrible drivers. Exceptions exist, of course.

See what I mean? What do you think?

I'm not going to use the "black people and fried chicken and watermelon" one.. cause as far as I can tell, EVERYONE loves fried chicken and watermelon. Yum.

There is some truth to all stereotypes. The Irish drink a lot (although Russia has more alcoholics), Blacks have big d*cks, Jews are cheap, Chinese have little ones, Italians talk with their hands, the French smell, Germans have no sense of humor, Mexicans work hard (and drink a LOT), New Yorkers talk fast, people from the south are more easy going, Puerto Ricans are loud and have no class, the British are very proper and have bad teeth, Los Angeles is LaLa Land, etc. etc.

Stereotypes as generalized trends among a given group and have a certain basis of truth, but the thing to remember is the "general" concept. Lots of women may be bad drivers, but surely not all women are bad drivers. I think the problem occurs when people lump ALL people of a group into a stereotype, especially negative ones.

Stereotypes are like myths...
Just because everyone talks about dragons and fairies doesn't mean they ever existed. Ignorance breeds generalization because people don't know any better. Generalizations become stereotypes. Moral to the story
Stupid people=stupid assumptions

I can live with stereotypes. Not all of them a re bad anyway. a couple of days ago this white chick came up to my desk and gave me her number. Maybe, stereotypes played a role in her decision to approach me. Should I be mad at that? Besides I intend to live up to that stereotype ... lol.
