You have to see these when they're in breeding condition, and they'll have to be at least 11/2 - 2 years old for that. Males will get breeding tubercles on the gill covers and along the front edges of the side fins. There's also a different shape to the vents at this time. Some people like to look at other characteristics like fin and body shape or behavior like "chasing" and while these give some clues if the fish are all the same variety, they really aren't that reliable.

It really hard too tell of goldfish species because male and females show the same apperance. I would say get a school of 8-10, this will gurantee you to have atleast one male and one female. It is really hard to breed goldfish as they require a large space tp breed.

Go to the petshop and get a goldfish book, it should tell you, there are slight variables in male or female fishes.

Depends what fish? I know with guppies (tropical) its their fins. The male has a longer underneath fin than the female.
