It could. It was an apparent insignificant story about a break in at the Watergate Hotel that ended up bringing down the Nixon Administration
It is not the "perceived crime" that is the problem, it is always the cover up that gets them

I don't accept Democratic spin as fact. The "news" article you referenced has little fact, but a lot of partisan Democrat criticism and allegation. Hardly a basis for making an intelligent decision about the facts, since little fact is included in the article.

Of course Gonzales went over the events that occurred before the firing. How else was he going to be sure he was apprised of all the facts? After all, many, if not all, these decisions were made prior to his appointment to AG.
