it went away as the actual level of musical talent also faded away. it's easier to just sit there strumming power chords.

You might check out the only album by Alter Bridge. There's a whole bunch of amazing guitar work on there...Mark Tremonti is the best guitarist to emerge in the last 10 years. Godsmack has also been known to do some decent solos on their albums as well.

I agree with Matt J. As talent went into obscurity, so did good solos.
But don't write them off just yet. A few of AFI's songs that haven't been released on albums have Jade making some hella noise, and Rise Against has a few good solos, particularly on Like The Angel.
But, on the whole, it seems that you're still living in the 80's if you plan on hearing many awesome guitar solos.
It's a good place to be though, I'll be there to visit, lol.

Check out the Mars Volta. They are crazy for the guitar solo and Omar is a really amazing guitarist.

It died somewhere in the early nineties... up in Seattle WA... about the time Nirvana sang "smells like teen spirit".
The whole alternative scene changed rock and roll. Power chords with super saturation and the 'mids' turned down.
The guitar solo is not really dead... it's still alive... it just not the money maker it used to be.
One of my guitar teachers told me once: "most people don't play fast ---- because they can't"

Nope there are bands like Shadows Fall and Dragonforce that still have killer solos. Besides Dave Mustaine's still recording so no the solo isn't dead.

Grunge killed solo's and brought along all the shitty bands of today. Like Nickleback, 3 Doors Down, Puddle of Crud you get the point...
