The oval arches distributes stress very evenly across a wide area so that it is relatively difficult to crack and egg by compression, when you consider the thickness and composition of the shell. To prove it, try squeezing the egg vertically between your thumb and a finger. Chances are, you cannot break it.

Egg is not round.
It is an oblate spheroid with one end smaller than the other end.
The smaller end comes first as it primes the "behind" of the chicken. As the "behind" gets stretched the larger end comes from 'behind'.
It takes long for an egg to come out although the chicken seems to enjoy the "labor pains" because the hen makes a repeatedly satisfying "cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck" sound before the egg is layed.
My own observations:
A extraordinarily good layer can lay one egg per day. The best one lays egg every other day.
It is very very seldom that a hen can lay two eggs in a day.
It is also very very seldom that an egg will contain two egg yolks.
No "twin" eggs can be layed.
No "Siamese" eggs can be layed.
I hope that this information is more than enough for a "kill."
I used to work in a poultry farm during my high school (Agricultural Curriculum) years.
Good Luck!

Besides being easier to lay,the oval shape offers maximum protection for the critter inside. There are few weak spots in the walls of the oval. Now a box shape would probally cave in.

Because chicken behinds would get sore sitting on little blocks? Because the round shape holds up well under the pressure of the weight of chicken behinds?

They are not...They are more oval then round. And any other shpae would probably hurt coming out. And for the same reasons, I'll bet they some out with the smaller side 1st
