Being a fireman is an extremely rewarding occupation. Most fire departments have you go through a series of tests to qualify for employment.
Written exam usually comes first, followed by a physical, drug testing, psychological testing. Endurance testing. There is usually a background check involved as well.
If you pass all of the preliminary testing and you are hired, you will go through a fire academy where they will teach you about fire science, extrication techniques, fire suppression and rescue.
Many departments these days cross train firemen as paramedics.
Training is never really over. You can graduate from the academy, but you will always have continuing education to keep your skills sharp and your certifications current.
Think seriously of how you would handle things like horrific, fatal accidents, or hearing people screaming that are trapped in a burning building.
Not everyone is suited to this profession. If you think you are, go for it. We can always use another hero!

It takes a special kind of person to be a firefighter. Depending on where you live, you can either be a full time firefighter and go through what Firespider suggested or you can be a volunteer firefighter. Being a volunteer they still do background checks and all that, but it is more of a learn as you go and you take the required classes (Firefighter I, Firefighter II, etc) at different times. On the volunteer departments here you don't have to have cross training on being a paramedic. Some are just Firefighters and some are Paramedics, or even MFRs (Medical First Responders). If you feel you have the courage ( and the stamina) to go into a burning building, accident scene (Where someone may be trapped or pinned by their car, have missing limbs, etc) or even a disaster situation while all others are running away from it, then you just may have the guts and the glory to be able to do it. If you are even a bit squeamish, then I would give it considerable second thought. If you are a full time firefighter you probably will have more of a schedule than a volunteer does. As a volunteer you have to be prepared to be away from your family at any given time, whether it be a weekend, during the night, or even during holidays. A volunteer has to be prepared to go at all times. Always on call.
I am a proud wife of a firefighter.

Diandra and the others are right. Women do find firemen sexy because of the protector thing. But just so you know, my brother's best friend is a fireman. In order to get through that entry test, you've got to be in great shape. It means running up buildings with extremely heavy equipment, and going into buildings with little air. The test is brutal but if you pass, you get a fantastic job with fantastic benefits. There are some politics though when it comes to a firehouse as well. Being a fireman is a fantastic job but it has it's dark side. Firemen aren't always treated well by their co-workers and things can get pretty tough at times, depending on the group you/re working with. Sabotage happens. Stuff that's kinda scary because they want to get people out or in. So, get in shape, stay in shape and get ready to be tough.

No I don't think you should !!!! There is more to it than meets the eye !!! It isn't all about saving people and being a hero you know !!!! Sometimes the fire department doesn't get there in time !!! You really want to be the first one at an accident or plane crash etc.? Think about it and if that is your thing then go for it Bud !!!!!!! Good luck either way !!!!

Only if that's something you really want to do with your life. Don't do it just because your brother could get you in easily or if you don't have any real interest in the job.
