The best seat is the one that fits your baby, fits your car, and will be used correctly each and every time. However, there are some seats out there that have features that make them easier to use (making them safer), or a better buy.
Look for high rear facing limits. Babies/toddlers should stay rear facing as long as possible, 1 year/20lbs is the bare minimum for turning them around. So, if you have a big baby, you're going to need a seat with a higher rear facing limit to keep him rear facing as long as possible. Most seats rear face to 30lbs, but Cosco/Safety1st/EddieBauer/Dorel seats rear face to 35lbs, and Britax and Sunshine Kids seats rear face to 33lbs. The cheapest seat that will rear face to 35lbs and fits easily in most cars is a Cosco Scenera: $40 at Walmart.

Britax seats are great, and very worth the money. Its not just that they have cushier padding and prettier prints: they last your child longer, making them earn their worth. Most convertible car seats only forward face to 40lbs, whereas Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon front faces to 65lbs! Also has much higher harness slots, since most kids outgrow their seat by height before weight. Kids should be kept in a 5 point harness as long as possible, its safest, so having a high weight and height limit is important.

So you'll have to decide what the best seat is. Take your baby to Babies R Us and try him in a few. Narrow it down and try them in your car to make sure they'll fit.

I CAN however, tell you what the worst seat choice would be: anything used. Used car seats are NOT safe unless it comes from a friend/relative and you are absolutely positive of its history and that it is not expired. (Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture printed on the seat)

The Evenflo Triumph is a nice seat, unless you have a heavy/tall baby, and then plan on purchasing another before the child is 3 years old. Steer clear of the Alpha Omegas - they're flimsy and the top slots are too low, so kids get too tall for them too soon. Also stay away from Overhead Shield seats - they are dangerous, the shields have actually injured kids.

Cosco Alpha Omega Elite. It's about 160$ or so and is the only car seat you'll need to buy. It's a big one though and if you have a small car you might not be able to fit it in. I know when my daughter was about 6 months she was out of her infant car seat and still needed to be rear facing. I looked long and hard. Graco makes an infant seat that fits up to 30 pounds which is great and much better than any other infant seat, especially since kids grow so fast. I ended up with the Cosco model and am very happy with it. I also bought a bigger car. Safety first, comfort second. Good luck with this one. Do your research and see what works for you. Contact your local fire department or police department to make sure your car seat is installed correctly--they usually have someone who can help or will direct you to the appropriate place.

This depends on the size of your baby. My son was a hefty 20 lbs at 6 months, so we bought the Alpha Omega Elite convertible carseat and he still faces backwards.

If your baby is smaller then you could still be getting by with the infant carrier for much longer.

I have heard that the evenflo seats are good too. All the reports and forums say that the Britax are the safest, but they're also the most expensive!

you're able to be able to desire to purchase a convertable toddler seat which will nicely be used rear dealing with. it truly is neither legal nor secure to place an toddler in a booster seat and/or have them journey front-dealing with. (you will no longer then could desire to purchase a booster in 6 months. it truly is excellent to maintain toddler in a carseat AND rear-dealing with for as long as feasible, even after 365 days.)
