Depending on how much you want to spend and what you use it for--I try to buy the one with the most computing power for the least amount of money(dont worry about who makes it--most pc parts are the same inside) You will need at least 512 mb of ram, and 1Gb(1024) is better. As applications keep getting bigger and bigger, more ram is needed-especially if you want windows vista. I like windows xp myself.

Averatec - they make laptops that seem smaller than the rest. I been having one since 2001 and it has never given me any trouble. But then I have a brother-in-law who had one, and it broke on him after about 3 years.

I use an HP/Compaq NC4010 ... it's fine (with a P4 mobile 1.6GHz... it's obsolete now but replaced by the NC4200 which is pretty similar).
Tough enough for my use, 1.5Kg weight, 4 hours on its standard battery, wifi/ethernet/modem built in, 12 inch XGA screen.
Looks stupidly small in a backpack designed for a 15" laptop but saves about 1.5-2Kg on my back!
