This will be very much dependent upon local custom, obstetrician preference, and availability of an anesthesia service that can safely do the procedure.

So, you will need to ask your health care providers, because the answer will vary a lot from place to place.

The nurse will or should ask you if you intend on getting the epidural. I swore I wasn't going to get it and they kept asking me if I was sure when they saw me having a hard time. In the end I gave in and took it.

they will most likely ask you if you have decided on pain control. You can either get an epideral or go natural or i think there are regular pain meds that are safe that they use during delivery. there ARE some risks involved with an epideral since they are injecting something into your spine. so, if you can you should probably go with the reg. pain meds. And be sure to talk to a nurse or doctor at your OBGYN about your options so you are totally prepared when you go into labor.

You should definitely ask for it. They will tell you if you are ready for it. If you do not, you may lose the window in which it is medically appropriate to administer. Sometimes the team will not offer if you do not ask. Others may. Tell your doctor in advance that you want one as well.

I'm pretty sure this is something your Dr. will go over with you ahead of time. Do some research, ask your Dr. and ask other Moms who have had one to see if this might be right for you.

It's usually offered, but I would ask for it well in advance so that when you need it, it will be available quickly. If you decide you don't need it, no big deal, but it will be nice to have it waiting for you if you do.

I would ask, if you want it, you should be able to give birth by your choice, if its not offered, ask at the beginning of your labor, and keep asking till you get it!

If you want to make CERTAIN, discuss it with your doctor beforehand. Don't wait until you get to the hospital ready to deliver before you bring it up. Once you get dilated past a certain point they can no longer give you one, and you could end up going "natural" accidentally (like I did).
