That's the average, not the rule. Some women have easy first time labors and second horrible labors. I think that it depends on the woman, the pregnancy, and the doctor.
Statistically speaking, though, the second time is USUALLY easier because your body has done it once before.
I'm about to be putting that theory to the test, though.

My first time was a breeze, I was in labor for 7 hours, I was laughing while I was pushing which only took 5 minutes. My 2nd one however was a different story, it was ony 5 hours but the pushing took an hour, and my 3rd was 4 hours with 2 pushes.

My first labor was over in less than 8 hours... my water broke, I went to hospital and when I was ready to push, it was only 5 sets of pushes and he was out... every person has a different experience though.

B/c you're body has never been through this before.
It's like training for a marathon. You have to get your body conditioned and ready to run - same thing as giving birth. The first time is the training. After that , it does go a little bit smoother.

its a myth. my first my water broke at 7pm. i didnt get contractions (gave me pitocin to start induction) around 1 am, got contracts about 3am. he was born at 9:30. so going from being in "active labor" i only labored about 6 1/2 hours my first time. only pushed 15 mins.

well thats not true for me. For my first baby...I was only in labor for 55 minutes. Nurses said it'll take 4 hours or more but NOpe I had the urge to push that baby sooner than they think.

I thought that was just a myth. My labor was very easy. I slept through most of it, and woke up when it was time to push. My actual labor did take long, (18 hours)I was contracting rather slowly, so they gave me pitossin to speed up the process. But I had no pain.
