Technically what he has done is illegal, although the software will work just fine. Symantec doesn't seem to use the same elaborate licensing scheme that Microsoft uses to ensure that only 1 license is used by 1 person.
He'll only get in trouble if Symantec decides to do an audit on him, but that's not likely. They usually go after businesses and corporations for licensing violations.

It means he's in breach of his license and technically Symantec could void his license to use any of the copies.

It means Symantec know the key is genuine and is registered to him but just think he's updating a bit frequently. Or he can hope that's what they think... maybe they're planning a midnight visit from the men in blue padded uniforms carrying the impressive firepower.

Symantec allows you to "activate" software packages up to three times because they find it easier to permit this rather than make you call in every time you have to do a reinstall because either your computer got messed up or their software had an issue that required you to have to reinstall it.

They have been doing this for years and, I'm certain, find it easier to do this rather than put users through the hell of having to call in for each and every reinstall. That would require a lot more technical support personnel to man the phone lines compared to allowing users up to three "activations".

This is in great part due to the fact that their software screws up so often. I've personally experienced on my own and serviced many client computers where Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus just pops up one day and says, "Norton Anti-virus has encountered an error and needs to be reinstalled." What is that all about????!!!!!!! It's a huge annoyance and frequently leads to massive problems getting it uninstalled and reinstalled. I've been slowly migrating to other products because of such issues with Symantec software, whereas I used to be a huge supporter of their products.

Finally, what your friend is acutally doing is illegal and dishonest. He/she purchased ONE LICENSE and is taking advantage of the "Three Activations Loophole" to install the product illegally on two additional computers.

When and or if the product fails and he/she has to reinstall it on one of the machines, they might be forced to call Symantec Support to get the "activation" queue cleared by a tech support person if they can provide a convincing argument as to why there are already three activations showing on Symantec's activation database for the product with that particular serial number. Believe me, they can see what's been done, and they may refuse to provide another activation. But more often than not, in an effort to not alienate the consumer, they'll allow another activation.

I once did some work for a client who worked at Intuit who told me that the average Quickbooks program was "activated" an average of 10 times per serial number!!!!!

Does that tell you how much consumers cheat software makers? And does that give you a clue as to why we pay so much for applications?

do no longer even waster your money on Norton! It takes over your pc and that's purely horrific. Get AVG, your at an advantage! i finished up reformatting my pc and that i put in AVG and it runs like a attraction! stable success!

Not sure but looks like there could be legal ramifications involved here, such as pirating. You should do some research before doing this yourself.
