More than likely, the cost of upgrading isn't worth doing as compared to upgrading by buying a new(er) computer.
Besides, the CPU and RAM restrictions of your old motherboard will probably prevent you from going much faster that maybe a 600Mhz processor (that's just a guess on my part, without researching... but use it as an example).
If your monitor is OK then upgrade by buying a new (or newer used) tower that has more up-to-date stuff.
You'd need to get a new processor, more RAM, a new OS, CD/DVD burner and more. Good luck finding CD/DVD software that operates on a Win 98 platform!
Do yourslef a favor and put the old workhorse out to pasture and opt for a new(er) machine.
One more option, check out Dell or Gateways remanufactured sales for a deal on a factory rebuilt maching and save some $$ while getting a machine that's under warranty.

Yes, upgrade to at least 2Gb, the new standard. Go to the dell website and to find out what kind you need. Should be anywhere from $20-40. This will significantly increase your computers performance. Computers are getting cheaper, and you can get a decent dual core processor for $500 and at least 2Gb's of ram and a very roomy 200Gb hard drive. If you wish to make that leap. You probably can't upgrade the graphics card in that computer since PCI express didn't really come on that many computers back then, so if you upgrade your whole computer and then upgrade the graphics card for a far superior computer than the one you have right now.

Actually you can upgrade that system but it really isn't worth the time or expense. To run most recent software you would need to upgrade to windows 2000 or higher, your ram you would want to run at the maximum for your motherboard (in this case probably 512)....your processor on the other hand is just to slow.
Rather then upgrade this system you might want to buy a new computer, however you want to try to find one with windows xp, and 1024 mb ram. Many new computers come with windows vista which is very buggy at this time and finding third party support is a crap shoot.
If you have the cash you could always get a Mac. I love my Mac but still work with PCs on a regular basis. Good luck.

Look your biggest problem is finding the parts to upgrade with, doubt anyone has any stock of that stuff. But like most people have your best bet is a new machine. The next best options is Linux find a lightweight Linux that will be able to run on that machine with minimal problem, then again burning DVD's might still not be possible.
Good luck

Your PC is way outdated. It is wiser to buy a new one instead because you would have to upgrade everything. It's like assembling your own new PC instead. here's the items I would recommend for you:
If you'd prefer XP, the recommended specs are
1) mono core above 2Ghz or any Duo Core processor
2) 512 MB RAM (1GB for optimum)
3)DVD burner
4) 40GB Hard Disk (for starters)
For Vista, you will need more hard disk space and at least 1GB RAM.

It isn't worth upgrading that hardware. Purchase a new system.
You can upgrade the operating system though - and for FREE.
Install Linux - http://www.ubuntu.com/ - and you'll be able to surf safely, be virus and spyware free and with a DVD burner you'll be able to burn DVDs too!

Get a Mac. That machine you're using is way too old to handle anything modern. That thing probably has ISA slots, which no one uses anymore.
