After we realized it was a flash-forward I was thinking back to when he was in the hospital with the other doctor. He said, (paraphrasing) "Go get my dad to come up here and see if he's drunker than I am." So is Jack's dad alive? It must have been Ben in the coffin, I've heard it was Sawyer--but I don't think that would jive.

Yes, Jack's dad is alive. That "flash forward" was not a flash forward at all, but another 'LOST in time' moment. We have to see more of Season 4 before we know if it was before the crash or after the rescue. Could the island bring Jack's father back to life as it made Locke walk, Mikhail live after being sizzled like a little smokie? Was that really Walt who talked to Locke? Jacob? The monster? Is Jacob the monster?
OR...
No, Jack's dad is not alive...the flash forward is real, Jack wants to be back on the island so bad he flies all over expecting to crash and find Locke...who is in the coffin as Jack now knows he should not have left the island. The newspaper has the letter "J" for John Locke on it when Jack is reading it. Kate is with Sawyer..."he will worry"....ALTHOUGH, was it odd that Jack looked older (grey hair) on the island than that supposed flash-forward????? I can't wait for Season 4.

He is dead.
Notice the 'wtf' look on the doctors face as Jack mentions his father. and the reaction Jack had when the pharmacist wanted to verify the prescription.
I think the casket is noone we've met yet. It is too short for it to be any adult on the island. It is also too short to be Walts casket.

i dont know how to answer that because LOST is supposed to be twists and left us to search for new answers for next season.
