apparently some people must, otherwise they wouldn't make enough money.
The money made is just from the advertisers "hoping" that someone will click on their adwords. They pay google for the exposure. The idea is the same with telemarketing, you reach a whole bunch of people, eventually someone will buy what you're selling.

If even a very small proportion of the World -Wide -Web clicks on adsense ads, I imagine a small proportion of that vast number of people is still quite a few people. (They don't have to buy, they just have to click...) And if the many many World- Wide -Web adwords folks (I imagine that's quite a few too) are paying their small pittance just to show up in those adsense ads out of which Google takes a cut, then I imagine there's plenty $$$ in the flow.
Think about it...the World -Wide -Web (i.e., Google) is a darned big ol' place! And "a small proportion" is *still* quite a few...

From Google's First Quarter 2007 results:
- Google’s partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $1.35 billion, or 37% of total revenues
The above data shows your hypothesis that "only a VERY SMALL proportion of users click Adwords or Adsense" is FALSE -- otherwise, how could Google earn $1.35 BILLION from Adsense alone?
Look at the financial data before you make your claims

Google is a big company... they don't just rely on those Ads. And the companies who place the ads pay Google to put them there. There are many millions of people seeing those ads. I'm sure there is a substantial number of people who click on them, then the advertiser benefits, and Google benefits because the advertiser keeps paying them for advertising space.

Google lives up to theier name by striving for a google (a gogle is an extremely large number, I believe it equals a million millions) users. If even .0001% of thier users use adwords, that's a lot of people!

You can make big money if you charge several dollars per click, depending on the location/timing of ad.

one percent of a billion is still 10 million.
clicks for some of my websites are as high as 11 percent, and as low as none. 2% is a typical number.
unfortunately i don't get a billion hits... well, actually, one of my sites ( http://BikiniBreak.com ) will have a billion hits in 1,282 years if i continue at my present rate.
