It would have been very hard for them to fight the Japanese from England. GIs were stationed in many parts of the world during WWII. As the war progressed they were on bases all over the place.

The US had to get the hell knocked out of them at Pearl Harbour before they helped England. Until then, US corporations were trading with Germany. Meanwhile Germany was exterminating Jews, bombing London and generally committing mass murder all over Europe. You must remember that the Germans attacked Poland in 1939. This was only 21 years after the First World War and the US helped then. Google 'US trade with Nazi Germany'. That should get some of the filth. It was not a time that the US has anything to be proud about and thousands of American lives were lost by the US not joining the war earlier.

Americans where transported to England, Wales and Scotland in 1942. They where also used and transported to Australia and New Zealand in 1943. But in direct conflict in Europe they where based in each country as soon as it was invaded, so Morrocco Algeria Tunisia Itlay Corsica Sardinia France Belgium Netherlands and Germany. I am sure in the Pacific theatre there was a few in India, Sri Lanka. In the Middle East, there was some in Persia (Iran and Iraq) but none in Egypt and Trans Jordan areas.

Conrange has the facts on Europe. Excellent answer.

In the Pacific, Hawaii was used as a major staging area, but there were American airstrips and bases on many small islands and in the Phillipines after they were liberated. Wake Island springs to my mind although I don't know the history.

With regards Europe, A division of U.S. troops were stationed in Northern Ireland, in WW2, from 1942, they were being kept there in case the Republic of Ireland was taken over by the Nazis.

There was also a United States Marine Corp Barracks in Londonderry Northern Ireland it only closed in 1964 I believe.

U.S. troops were also in Iceland & Greenland and the Alutian Islands off Alaska.

If air strips qualify as base, then they fought and lost lives to establish many bases.
