COFFERDAM - A watertight, temporary structure, for keeping the water from an enclosed area that has been pumped dry so that construction may be done.

A Coffer Dam is usually built as a temporary structure. They are not meant to be exceptionally strong or permanent.

I believe it is a Dam that is made from or partially from land fill. Rock and dirt. Check Cumberland Dam.

I believe it is spelled "coffer" dam -- if you search on that in any image search, you should find some fine examples.
